Executive Leadership: The Academy Fellowship

By identifying senior leaders in the organization and accelerating their readiness for executive roles, the Academy Fellowship aspires to create immediate bench strength to help address the hospital and health system’s most pressing priorities. Through a unique advanced curriculum combining out-of-industry and health care-specific teaching, and a deep focus on applied learning tools, the Fellowship strives to drive exponential growth in the organization’s capacity to take on today’s opportunities to enhance bottom-line performance.


The participant profile includes next generation leaders at the VP/director level, emerging senior talent across clinical and non-clinical functions, and post-graduates with or without business degrees.

Curriculum

The Academy Fellowship curriculum is focused on the largest performance issues for health systems, including margin improvement, capacity management, staff retention, technology implementation, and medication errors. Specific focus is placed on applicability rooted in tools and the day-to-day work of health system leaders. Course topics include:

  • Achieving breakthrough operations
  • Elevating health system strategy
  • Leading human capital
  • Leading the 21st century health care enterprise
  • Maximizing health system financial performance
  • Transforming the enterprise

Application Resources

A number of resources are available to facilitate and complement the Fellowship’s curriculum, including:

  • An applied learning platform that includes customized 360-degree assessments, individual development planning, on-site project practica focused on key strategic priorities, and on-site coaching and mentoring support
  • Support for fellow selection, coaching, and practica

Delivery Method

Fellows participate in a national, multi-institution university model with six intensives across two years. The Academy Fellowship offers an accelerated model for senior management.

Staffing

The Fellowship has dedicated a full-time staff of researchers, education specialists, and faculty to the task of creating a unique teaching experience for each fellow, and ensuring its application for immediate, on-site use. The Fellowship also benefits from a unique partnership with select members of the faculty of the Harvard Business School and Harvard School of Public Health, who assist in curriculum development and occasionally serve as guest lecturers. Full-time Fellowship faculty are drawn from the senior-most ranks of our teaching staff and are steeped in years of Advisory Board research and understanding of health care.
