Frontline Nursing: Center for Frontline Nursing Leadership

Through a shared national-standard curriculum tailored to the needs of frontline nursing leaders, the Center and partnering organizations work together to equip nursing leaders with the skills to improve unit performance and enact reform; develop a critical mass of leveraged role models in the line to build and support a broader culture of leadership; elevate the prestige of the frontline nurse role and retain the organization’s highest performers; identify and develop the next generation of leadership talent; and support and leverage nurse manager time.


The Center’s curriculum and services are designed to serve the educational needs of nurses at the front lines of patient care who are serving in formal or informal leadership roles. Participants include Assistant nurse managers, charge nurses, tenured staff nurses, clinical nurse specialists, patient care facilitators, emerging frontline leaders, and preceptors.

Curriculum

The Center’s curriculum provides a coordinated sequence of coursework structured to provide rising nurses with the foundation for leadership impact. Course topics include:

  • Elevating team performance
  • Exerting influence at the front line
  • Frontline critical thinking
  • Realizing leadership opportunities at the front lines of nursing

Application Resources

A number of resources are available to facilitate and complement the Center’s curriculum, including:

  • On-site learning lab for frontline nurses
  • Development planning and support
  • On-the-job application through project practica
  • Dedicated faculty advisor

Delivery Method

Center partners participate in a two-year on site university, with courses structured in semesters. The Center provides on site teaching and support for coaches.

Staffing

The Center has dedicated a full-time staff of researchers, education specialists, and faculty to the task of developing and teaching the Center curriculum. Faulty members include experienced nurse executives, nurse managers, and expert facilitators.
