Employment begins with a comprehensive two-week orientation program covering a variety of topics including operations and strategy, research, professional development and our internal business operations and IT systems. On an ongoing basis, the firm offers a wealth of professional development and training opportunities including—but not limited to—those described below.

Professional Training

Professional Development Series

Professional Development Series (PDS) is a two-day, in-house retreat designed for entry-level and mid-level staff seeking to enhance professional skills and prepare for greater leadership roles at the Advisory Board. The course focuses on expanding problem solving and analytical ability, developing presentation skills, gaining exposure to departments across the firm, and career planning strategies.

Health Care 201 Series

Health Care 201 supplements to the initial health care industry training received during one’s first few weeks on the job and is meant to give more experienced ABC employees both deeper and broader understanding of hospital executives’ chief concerns and the overall health care economy. This session aims to keep ABC staff abreast of the company’s most recent research initiatives.

MBAbc

This two-day business accelerator course is designed to introduce non-MBA students to basic business and analytical concepts, provide opportunity to network with ABC executives, as well as improve strategic thinking ability through a series of Harvard Business School case studies and in-depth analysis. Topics covered include: Financial Decisions, Introductory Accounting, Marketing Analysis, and Strategic Thinking. These sessions are typically taught by the firm’s senior-most leadership.

Mini Med School Series

This three-part series aims to give staff insight into key areas within the hospital’s focus, providing a better grasp on standard hospital operations and vocabulary when speaking with members. Sessions are taught by a physician on-staff and cover areas including: Cardiology, Oncology and Trauma and the Emergency Department.

Management Training

New Manager G.O.A.L. (Growing Outstanding Advisory Board Leaders)

This two-day training program provides new managers with a theoretical framework for developing managerial skills. The firm's top executives review contemporary practices to better define a manager's role in communicating, team-building and administering performance appraisals. The fundamentals of employment law are also reviewed by the firm's legal counsel. This offering also includes a "360-degree" assessment of one's leadership capability, with senior managers, peers, and direct reports giving feedback on the individual’s leadership, project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Management Intensive

The Management Intensive series gives more-senior managers an opportunity to take part in a comprehensive 360 degree review process to assess their performance and areas for growth in nearly 20 managerial competencies. Participants are exposed to management best practices through a comprehensive set of modules and case studies lead by the firm’s top facilitators.

Skills Training

Presentation Skills

Designed for newer employees who need to develop presentation skills – as well as more tenured employees seeking to hone skills—this workshop gives attendees access to expert speakers and facilitators across the firm and enables staff to hone didactic, facilitative, and question/answer skills.

Information Technology Training

The firm continually offers employees the chance to build computer skills in a variety of applications including Microsoft Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. IS Training Staff lead small groups of attendees through in-depth, hands-on training in specific applications, ensuring that employees are able to leave with tangible skills to take back to their day-to-day roles within the firm.

Research Methods and Statistics Primer

Designed to introduce Advisory Board Company employees to the research and data analysis methods commonly used in medical and behavioral research, it aspires to help company researchers and writers weigh the value of findings that appear in journals and related publications.

The Academy

The Academy

The Academy is a series of workshops designed and delivered by the firm's senior Strategy Research managers. Through lecture and team activities, employees acquire quantitative analysis, modeling, interviewing, writing and presentation skills central to the Strategy Research function. Other topics of study include inductive and deductive reasoning, root-case analysis, flowcharting and advanced graphics.
